What is enkelfähig?

Enkelfähig is entrepreneurship in the 21st century. It means living in a value-oriented way and reconciling this with entrepreneurial thinking. Sustainability is becoming a premise for economic success.

The basis for this approach is an enkelfähig attitude, which the economic philosopher Anders Indset defines as follows:

„Being enkelfähig means living in a value-oriented way and reconciling this with entrepreneurial thinking. Enkelfähig is economic sustainability over time – not in time – where ecology and economy are not contradictory."

Anders Indset

It is not about winning in the short term, but about being successful in the long term. Enkelfähig companies take global and local factors into account. They operate in a performance-oriented, technology-focused and value-based manner. A stable economy is the operating system of a functioning society. Companies therefore play an important role in shaping the future of our planet. Only together can we rethink business and hand over our companies as well as our planet to our grandchildren one day.

Why do companies need to act in a more eco-friendly way?

Our planet is at a turning point. If we continue as we are, there will be no future worth living for.A temperature rise of just 2 degrees Celsius has an enormous impact on our lives. Extreme weather such as droughts and heavy rainfall will lead to the destruction of land areas and habitats, countless plant and animal species will become extinct, and the rise in sea level will be greatly accelerated.

This means financial damage of up to 40 trillion US dollars, resource scarcity and poverty for 3.7 billion people, and a decline in economic output of 7 to 14 percent. Companies in particular have a duty to act sustainably. After all, only 100 companies are responsible for more than 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. So together, we can make a difference: By rethinking entrepreneurship and putting sustainable action at the heart of how we do business.

Enkelfähig Manifest – an initial, philosophical definition by Anders Indset

It is a playful way to shape a holistic, humanistic and compassionate economy, in which it is not about winning or losing (finitude), but about staying in the game for as long as possible (infinitude → Enkelfähigkeit). It’s about being connected as fellow humans.

Being enkelfähig means living in a value-oriented way and reconciling this with entrepreneurial thinking (performance orientation and optimization). Enkelfähig companies are technology-driven; the enkelfähig way goes through new technologies and new business models that solve (fundamental) problems of humanity – by and for people.

Enkelfähig companies take global and local factors into account by applying a fundamental ecological and economical philosophy (ecosophy); a connectedness across generations between human and nature.

Enkelfähig is economic sustainability over time – not in time – where ecology and economy are not contradictory.
